In search of much better value Last month the House of Commons Public Accounts Committee (PAC) published a report on the effectiveness of the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), which found that the scheme had failed to meet its objectives or provide value for the £23 billion it is expected to cost the tax payer. “Too much money has been wasted to date on ineffective ‘green’ schemes,” said OFTEC CEO Paul Rose who was not alone in his thinking. “The last two years of clueless policies and ill-informed emotive health data has devalued the diesel ﬂ eet by up to 40%,” said Howard Cox, founder of the Fair Fuel Campaign, which will be ‘protesting to No 10, Mr Gove and Sadiq Khan to ensure all drivers get the fairest of deals and incentives to move to cleaner fuels.’ “It’s time to work with motorists, not ﬂ eece them of their hard-earned cash,” added Howard. RHI’s impact on the public’s hard- earned cash was certainly noted by PAC – ‘the scheme simply doesn’t work for households and businesses unable to pay the high upfront costs of renewable and low-carbon heating equipment.’ So where do we go from here? Well, the government’s ‘renewed commitment’ to shale gas exploration was welcomed by the GMB union which ‘promises to work with the industry and apply pressure to ensure it is as safe as possible’. Having had its Scottish shale plans previously knocked back, INEOS Shale was ‘astonished to learn that the Scottish Government claims that it has not issued a ban on fracking in Scotland, and indeed there may never be one!’ As Paul Rose points out – “now is the time to look seriously at the challenges; what consumers actually want and need, and how valuable government resources can be channelled to best meet these requirements.” One of two tanks built on site in Southampton by West Midlands- based Allied Storage Tanks.
