Detecting and disrupting
Tiger Oil’s eye-catching tanker
Last month two men were arrested on the forecourt of a County Down
fi lling station as part of an HM Revenue and Customs investigation
into a suspected fuel fraud, where HMRC offi cers, supported by Police
Service of Northern Ireland, observed a tanker pumping fuel into an
underground tank.
A parked van was obstructing a clear view of the process from the
road. On closer inspection offi cers found the connecting hose from the
tanker running into an underground tank via a storm drain. In total
10,950 litres of suspected laundered fuel, believed to be worth £6,132 in
lost duty and taxes was seized from the site.
“We remain alert to the dangerous methods often used by
criminals,” said Steve Tracey, assistant director, HMRC’s Fraud
Investigation Service.
“We will continue to work with our multi-agency partners to tackle
attempts to remove the government markers from rebated fuel; this is
certainly one crime we are determined to detect and disrupt.”
Fantastic tankers
Two men discovered on site were arrested and questioned by HMRC.
Pending further enquiries, one man was charged with the other
released on bail. Investigations into the fraud are ongoing
Always on the lookout for fuel tankers with an eye-catching design, Fuel
Oil News spotted this great looking tanker on Tiger Oil’s Facebook page.
Built by Road Tankers Armagh in March 2017, the vehicle, which
carries 13,500 litres, is mounted on a Scania P320 and is fi tted with
Emco Wheaton metering.
“Tiger Oil supplies a mix of derv, gas oil and kero, so it’s handy
to have a spare compartment with derv, which is why we ordered this
vehicle with a 5-compartment tank,” explained Robbie Gaffney whose
parents established Drogheda-based Tiger Oil in 1987.
“On full air all around, the chassis can be lifted up for clearance
when delivering to farms and building sites.”
If your company is celebrating the arrival of a fantastic new tanker,
it could be in the running for the title of Fuel Oil News tanker of the
