Adapting to change and evolving ‘The difﬁ culty lies not so much in developing new ideas as in escaping from old ones’ – John Maynard Keynes Whilst compiling this issue of Fuel Oil News and speaking to key players working in fuel distribution, reﬁ ning and retail fuels, I was struck by the overriding themes of ﬁ nding solutions, overcoming challenges, being innovative and moving forwards. Some may see our industry as old, but under no circumstances is this industry willing to just fade away... Many working in today’s oil industry now have their sights very ﬁ rmly set on developing an energy future, with some already planning to change names to better reﬂ ect that future. Inspiring the next generation of innovators will be crucial to success. For one technology-focused and marketing driven distributor, being both innovative and enthusiastic is vital. The desire to attract additional younger, smarter people from outside the industry may be one key to its future, but so is our need to highlight that the industry is already attracting young, innovative talent who are making a difference now. Looking to change perceptions about our industry and to embrace the future, is evident in the appointment of new ambassadors at a long-established lubricants company and a second generation in an engineering company taking the lead on a recent ministerial visit. Facing up to a future that’s moving in a different direction is tough, but this sector has a proven track record of adaptability; with years spent in fuel distribution many have evolved from delivering coal in sacks to oil in road tankers, more latterly driven by highly sophisticated software and hardware. ‘The world is changing and we must adapt’ one key player told Fuel Oil News, pointing out that oil and gas can give ﬂ exibility for renewables, making the industry a key actor for the future.
