These hand-drawn illustrations are one step in Ravilla’ s deep-dive diagnostic process that ensures patients are heard, equipped with knowledge, and empowered to actively participate in their healthcare.
For some, she explains how low-density lipoprotein cholesterol – LDL-C – forms the building blocks of plaques and how these plaques play a role in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease— the“ silent killer.” For other patients, she explains that 1 in 5 people genetically inherit Lipoprotein( a), a notoriously vicious and underdiagnosed particle that increases the risk of cardiac events exponentially. Each patient-tailored illustration is an invaluable educational experience.
These hand-drawn cartoons are more than a teaching tool; they serve as an empowering tool. Ravilla’ s consultations are designed to uncover the subtle nuances that a standard blood panel may miss.
Ravilla’ s reward is the gratification that comes from the moment the“ sweaty palms” of anxious patients stop. By dedicating sufficient time to“ peeling back the layers” of a patient’ s history, she moves beyond the clinical charts and into the human story. It’ s in this window of time that she earns the trust to turn a potentially devastating diagnosis into a shared mission of success. She passionately shares that“ when the puzzle pieces click together” on one of her handdrawn cartoons,“ the relationship shifts from doctor and patient to a team working toward a shared mission.”
As a Lipid expert, Ravilla’ s credentials place her at the pinnacle of the field, but her heart lies within the community. Her work embodies the FSU College of Medicine mission to bring world-class care to underserved populations. By transforming patients into“ messengers” through her educational consultations, Ravilla is deeply passionate about raising lipidology awareness within the community, improving the future of cardiovascular health across North Florida and the surrounding region.
This expanded access to healthcare is entering a new era as Ravilla moves into the new FSU Health location at Phillips Road in Tallahassee. There, she will have a dedicated space to continue practicing lipidology, empowering those who previously thought they were out of options to now feel hopeful, transforming patient outcomes.
Learning never stops, and Ravilla is dedicated to ensuring that life-saving information doesn’ t stay sandwiched in a textbook. She is turning FSU Health Lipidology into a hub for awareness, demonstrating that health equity begins with robust patient education combined with delivery of cutting-edge medical therapeutics for all, including the under-served populations— the ultimate mission of the FSU College of Medicine.
