Our New Normal? By: Loreal A. Arscott, Esq. On this Labor Day weekend, we celebrate the American labor movement and the “contributions workers have made to the development, growth, endurance, strength, security, prosperity, productivity, laws, sustainability, persistence, structure, and well-being of the country” while we continue to mourn the 31 innocent lives lost during the mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio last month. O past 4 years, this nation has averaged at least 1 mass shooting every 3 months. The Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit that tallies gun violence in the United States, defines a mass shooting as an incident where 4 or more victims are shot or killed. These shootings occur across all demographics, in various public places, and in spaces once considered sacred. The increase in frequency of these shootings is alarming. It is no coincidence that this spike in mass shootings coincides with the rise of the age of political UR hearts and prayers remain with the families of all the victims. This tragedy begs the looming question, “Is it too soon to discuss meaningful gun control?” Mass shootings seem to be occurring more frequently. Over the AUG-SEP R.indd 16 30/08/2019 06:48:49
