frontier. First of all, fencing cuts off sources of water. These water sources are extremely vital to our survival in cold weather. Barbed wire fencing is also a major conflict with cattle from the North. Cattle from the North instinctually migrate away from the blizzard conditions of the Northern plains to the warmer and plentiful Southern plains, but with the barbed wire fencing, the herds could be decimated from the cold and lack of food. Third, with the purchase of land and fencing in of the range, many small ranchers are left without land for their cattle to feed on and water for their cattle to drink from.

It is because of these issues that I would like to propose some solutions. First, there should be a law passed making fence cutting legal so cattle passing through can find land. There should also be a law passed stating that there should only be fencing every four miles so that herds and tribes could roam freely on the expanses. With this space, ranchers can graze and herd their cattle on long cattle drives. Lastly, it should be legal to stretch fences across public domain that is not owned or leased so that there is more land for cattle to feed on and more water sources available for both cattle and the people.

SOLUTIONS

In conclusion, while barbed wire may be exceedingly beneficial to frontier life, one must consider the consequences that may arise from the barbed wire fencing. This was an editorial from Anh Nguyen, who is proud to serve Frontier Illustrated Magazine.
