THE 10000 HOUR RULE BY

Malcolm Gladwell

According to Mr Gladwell it takes roughly ten thousand hours to achieve mastery in a field.

If we are taking that as the measure on when a player will become professional player, assuming the player trains three hours every day for a week that will give the player a total of twenty one hours a week.

Twenty one hours a week times four weeks will give the player a total of eighty four hours a month. If we times that by twelve the player would have accumulated one thousand and eight hours of training in a year.

Taking one thousand and eight hours we times that by ten and the player would

ten and the player would have reached ten thousand and eighty hours of training in ten years.

Going on Mr Gladwell's magic number for a player to become a professional player at the age of eighteen they would have needed to start training at the age of eight.

THE STRUCTURE

Most amatuer clubs train twice a week offering 1 hour 30 minutes a session as the average and then a game on the weekend. For this purpose we are going to exclude game time and only look at training time.

In a week the player would have had a total of three hours contact time. Times three hours by four and the player would have a total of twelve hours. accumulated 144 hours. If we are taking 10 years as the time frame

Twelve times twelve, by the end of the season the player would have accumulated one hundred and forty four hours. If we are taking ten years as the amount of years it takes the player would have only accumulated one thousand and forty four hours of training meaning that by the time the player is 70 years old they they will master their field provided they start from the day they are born.

THE BREAKDOWN

Looking at most South African structures of clubs and how they train. The last two weeks of October to the first two weeks of January they will close for year end exams and December holidays. If we add that up it gives us three months off. Over a four year period the player would have had a full year of training off.
