Frisco Fire Gives Students First Look at Emergency Medicine

Health science students respond to 911 calls along with paramedics and EMTs .

Reedy High School junior Abby Olson was ready and waiting .
“ Is it me ? Is it me ?” she remembers thinking when she first heard the dispatcher .
It was her medic unit , and she was responding to her first call on a ride-along with the Frisco Fire Department .
“ I ran out to the ambulance not really knowing what I was going to get ,” she said .
Olson earned her Certified Nurse Aide ( CNA ) certification through a course at the Frisco ISD Career and Technical Education Center . As a CNA , she can help paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians ( EMTs ) with basic skills such as assessing a scene and checking patient vitals .
“ You can start to see and know where you want to go and determine if medicine is truly for you ,” Olson said . “ I fell in love with emergency medicine .”
Health science students get handson experience across the community in various health care settings , from hospitals to nursing homes . They assist and observe everything from physical therapy to the delivery of babies .
All CNA and EMT students get the opportunity to work with first responders with the Frisco Fire Department , where they quickly learn the importance of collaboration when every second counts .
