NWTC partners with Prevea Health to train essential workers
Adult returning student ’ s curiosity led her back to the classroom
In May , Kristin Helms graduated with a Design and Graphic Technology associate degree while working full-time at Wild Blue Technologies . Helms , a mother of two with nearly 20 years of experience in the printing industry , said that curiosity and a desire to learn pushed her to pursue formal education .
“ There is never a ‘ perfect time ’ to go back . I remember I was working in the production side of printing and wanted to explore more options . I said to myself , ‘ I can do that ,’” said Helms . “ Now , I directly use what I ’ m learning in the classroom at my job - which makes the learning curve so much easier and exciting .”
Balancing work , family , and school is not always easy , but Helms said that eight-week classes have made it much more manageable . “ I wish I could have done eight-week sessions from the start ... you have the flexibility to take things at your own pace and focus on one or two topics at a time .” She also said that working on projects with her kids is rewarding . “ Honestly , over half of my portfolio is made up of photos and designs of my kids ... it feels great to include them in the process .”
Helms proudly took the stage with the rest of the College ’ s Spring 2022 graduates , receiving her diploma on May 19 at the Green Bay campus commencement ceremony .
Exacerbated by the pandemic , the state ’ s skilled healthcare workforce shortage is continuing to impact Northeast Wisconsin employers . To combat this issue , Prevea Health has partnered with NWTC ’ s Corporate Training & Economic Development department to upskill its employees . Program participants are working toward state certification as Medical Assistants ( MA ). The MA position is a growing profession that has become increasingly important in providing comprehensive , patientspecific , team-based care .
This effort started in 2020 with the support of a Wisconsin Technical College System Workforce Advancement Training grant , and in 2021 13 Prevea employees earned their Healthcare Customer Service Pathway Certificate . All employees are continuing their coursework to obtain certification as medical assistants by December of this year . By completing their MA certification , employees will be able to fill open skilled positions within Prevea ’ s network and increase their earning potential .
