TIPS FO R TAC K L I N G FI RST Y E AR BY HELEN NIXON, 2nd year Hi! I‘m Helen and I’ve just finished first year. I know this time last year I was feeling both nervous and excited about coming to uni. When you tell someone what you’re going to study, they all say the same thing: “ooh, Medicine, that’s “a hard degree” and they’re not lying. There is more content and contact time compared to other courses. BUT it is completely manageable, as proven by every year that does it. It’s important to remember you’re going to have such a fantastic time at university and (eventually) you will be a doctor! You already got the grades to come to medical school (which is a massive achievement) and now it’s time for the next step in your journey. The working style is unlike what you’re used to, so try different things suited to you. There’s 300 students in the same boat so look around you for guidance! University is a great place to take up something new or continue what you love. 100% join a society. It’s a great way to make friends and it’s a lot of fun. In the next five years you’re not expected to live and breathe medicine... have some breaks! Liverpool is a great city with events for every individual, an endless supply of cute cafes, and of course the scenic (yet windy) Albert Docks so make sure to check it out. The LMSS put on some great events which I can’t recommend enough. They help you bond with other freshers and make friends in other years, which are brilliant for support in all parts of university life. The LMSS continue to organise fantastic events throughout the entire year so get involved! Most importantly, enjoy your first year at Liverpool Medical School. I promise it will fly by! Throw yourself into anything... and don’t be shy! 6
