Avatar vs. Avatar
Many fans of the Avatar: the Last Airbender cartoon were ecstatic to watch the Avatar: the Last Airbender movie, but how loyal was this adaption to the animated series? The movie, Avatar: the Last Airbender was a total disappointment all the fans. The biggest difference was the characters. In the T. V. series you grow to absolutely love all the characters, including the animals such as MoMo and Appa. The character development for each individual was absolutely stunning. In the movie there hardly is character depth at all. It’ s just special effects surrounding people with frowns on their faces the entire time. For example, Aang was always an optimistic and joyful person, however in the film he was solemn and serious. You couldn’ t relate to the character itself, such as in the cartoon what made it so unique is that you could relate to each person and sympathize for them. They each had their own background or story to tell. For example, the entire first half of the series was about Zuko trying to capture the Avatar, although you wanted to hate him you couldn’ t. You just felt downright sorry for him because of his past and his story. Zuko was not a flat character in the series; he had depth and much character just like all the rest of the characters in this series, but the movie took most of that away. The characters in the movie were stereotypes of typical heroes and villains.
Another problem was the casting. They made Sokka and Katara Australian( white), and Zuko is South- Asian, while in the cartoon, it was the opposite. The next problem is small, but slightly irritating. In the cartoon, Aang’ s name is pronounced( Ay-ng), but in the movie, it was pronounced( Aww-ng). Another example is Zuko’ s uncle’ s name. Iroh is pronounced( Eye-row) however in the film, it was pronounced( Ear-oh). Not only did it show a lack of concern for the original series, but it showed the complete separation of these two works. Another problem is all the details they cut from this movie. One of the major parts of the plot that was left out was the Kyoshi warriors. Suki, the main leader, is Sokka’ s“ first kiss” and later becomes his girlfriend in the T. V. series. Suki also helps show some of the more serious side of Sokka. Yet somehow in the movie, she was seen as unimportant. Especially in the fact that in the series she helps defeat the Fire-Lord Ozai, but even though they are featured in almost every single episode in the last season then she is obviously not needed in the movie. Continuing on Sokka’ s love life, his love life as a whole seems to be fixated on the romance of Princess Yue and he in the film. In the animated series, this relationship lasted only three episodes. The director also failed to notice that the relationship is an affair so not necessarily supposed to happen. So in the end the only partially decent part of this movie was the effects, but maybe if they didn’ t focus so much on the effects and more
