PAUL LANGLANDS
THIS IS JUST THE
BEGINNING
Langers can’t stop grinning as he
parks his bike and begins gearing
down.
“Bro, to roll that out, even though it
probably wasn’t as clean as I would’ve
liked, is a rad buzz. In hindsight I
probably shouldn’t have jumped in that
wind, but to get some reward out of it
after building the jump from scratch is
amazing…. I want to go bigger!”
And that’s the crazy twist to this whole
thing: this is just the beginning. There’s
room for Langers to stretch the longdistance jump out to at least 73ft, and
after that, well, the rest of the hillside is
a blank canvas.
“I get a different idea every day, but I
want to start using the terrain for some
big, lofty hips, step-ups and kickers
to the same scale as this jump,” he
explains, pointing down the hillside.
“The possibilities out here are pretty
much endless. This is just the start,
really.”
“At the end of the day I want to show
people that you don’t have to be
winning comps, have a ton of sponsors
and do a hundred Tailwhips to be
having fun on a bike. It’s about doing
what you want and enjoying riding,
regardless of whether you did well or
not. Did you have fun doing a hundred
barspins? If you did, then mint, you’ll
come away happy. If you didn’t have
fun, then maybe you should look at
what you’re doing, and go back to the
times when you were enjoying your
riding.
For me, enjoyment doesn’t come from
big comps or making mad money. It’s
about spending time in the hills with a
shovel and a BMX and pushing myself
and the sport to a new level.” T
