£ The epic container tower
acts as the roll-in for the
‘Dirt Dogs’ BMX jumps
The idea behind the imposing hit
was to run jumps alongside Jed’s
Dirt Dogs, so Nick and Jed could
throw down side by side for film
projects. At the same time, the
compound needed to provide
truck and vehicle access to the
fully functioning farm and the
cattle yards, alongside the jumps.
“It took a lot of planning to have
the jumps there, but not be in the
way of each other or the run-out
of the main FMX jump, which has
a concrete run-up and can’t be
turned at all,” explains Nick. “I
made the Orbiter pretty poppy,
but it’s super smooth. It doesn’t
matter if you’re on a 250 or a 450,
you can’t over-jump it. The harder
you hit it, the higher it send s you.
I was sh**ting myself the first time
I hit it, and I’m the only one who’s
jumped it so far.
“It’s funny, because when you’re
building something you’re all
tough and like ‘yeah, let’s make
this gnarly’. Then once you’ve
finished making it, you’re like
‘oooh I don’t know about this’!”
he laughs.
With the profile of the Franklin
Farm starting to gain all sorts of
attention, thanks to the Dirt Dogs
project, the lads have set up a
Facebook page to increase their
presence.
While the guys maintain they’re
building and expanding the
Farm more for themselves at the
moment, plans are afoot to hold a
multi-discipline “Dirt Dogs” event
later this year.
“The first one won’t be anything
major, but will be more about
getting the ball rolling and getting
a feel for how events run,” Nick
reveals. “We’re not out to copy
the Frew’s Farm Jam or anything,
but it’ll be a similar sort of event.
We want to see some of the
regular riders like Jed, myself,
Levi Sherwood, Luke Price, Mitch
McHardy, Caleb Delacy, Paul
Langlands, Hugh Wotherspoon
and Billy Clarke, out here training,
jamming and having a fun time.”
Further down the track, Nick and
Jed intend to open the Farm up
as an action-sports training facility
to help up-and-coming riders
