What do you mean by that ?
Well , when I see a contest these days , I don ’ t even want to watch it . No offence to anybody , but I ’ m so sick of seeing Flairs and Cali Rolls and all that cookiecutter s ** t .
The judges are like “ oh , you need to have a KOD Flip because that ’ s the hardest trick , or a Flair because it ’ s the newest thing to do ”. With the exception of Tom Pagés , I don ’ t think there ’ s any individuality left in freestyle and that sucks .
I ’ d love to see things like Dustin Miller ’ s Switch-Hand No-Footed Cans , or One- Hand to One-Hand Seatgrabs . I feel like we ’ ve done it all already , so let ’ s just do cool s ** t and put together a run that you think is the most fun and most different .
I know I do the same s ** t in my runs – Dead Body , Turntable to No-Handed Can , No-Handed Shaolin – but I love the fact that that nobody else will have those tricks in their run . The day everyone else starts doing those tricks , I ’ m going to park them .
Previous judging systems that made us tick a box in each category blended us into a mindset of needing certain tricks to be competitive . That has to change if we want the sport to retain its appeal and become interesting again . Otherwise we ’ ll continue to see the same s ** t in different coloured gear .
Are you content with the level you ’ re at ? Are there any tricks you ’ d like to learn ?
I am content , but I think I ’ d like to learn Rock Solid Flips as I think they look cool . And even though I ’ ve just bagged them out , I wouldn ’ t mind learning Flairs , but contests need to incorporate them better into runs ; at the moment a Flair can take up to 20 seconds out of your run because the ramp is tucked away in some obscure corner of the course .
I ’ d like to never ever quit refining the tricks that I have , making them better , cleaner , smoother . There ’ s always plenty of fine-tuning I can do .
How many years do you think you ’ ve got left in the sport ?
As many as I can , bro ; I ’ ve got nothing other than this . As I said earlier , this big ramp is messing with me right now . Before this ramp was introduced I was riding at a level I felt I could continue at for as long as I needed to . My body feels good , I feel somewhat fit , my reaction time is still good , and I still feel I could continue doing this for years . Who knows how long the contests and big ramps will last , but I ’ d like to keep doing this for as long as I can , because it ’ s what I know . It ’ s all I know .
For anyone that wants to follow in your footsteps , what advice would you give them ?
The most important thing is to learn your bike-handling skills . You need to know your way around a motocross track and learn now to make saves , be one with the bike , be calm , confident , and learn how to correct it when something goes wrong . That ’ ll save you from so many injuries – the instant you ’ re in a situation where you freak out and you ’ re not comfortable , s ** t will go wrong . You ’ ve got to be determined , focused , willing to put in the time and get over all the obstacles that are put in front of you . It ’ s not an easy sport , but at the end of the day it ’ s a lot of fun and there ’ s no better feeling in the world . t
