So spill the beans: have you done
any extra-special bike customization
outside the normal?
I honestly feel like I have that much to
learn without going there. This year
it doesn’t sound like I’ve been doing
much with my career, but I’ve just been
trying to get a solid base going again so
I can really knuckle down. Bike changes
will come if I can’t master the Front
Flip or Double Flip. If that happens,
you might see my bike missing half its
frame or something. [laughs]
X Games is coming to Sydney next
year – you must be pretty excited
about that.
Mate, I’m real excited. Now that I’ve got
my base set up and I’m healthy, I’d love
to take a gold medal there on home
soil. I’m always pumped for X Games
but to have one here in Sydney, I’ll have
a lot of friends come up and my family,
so yeah, it’s going to be one hell of an
event. All of the Aussie boys and the
Kiwi always seem to be on the podium,
and now that X Games is coming
Down Under it’s bound to put a fire in
everyone’s belly.
Yeah, why do you think all these
Southern Hemisphere riders are
dominating at the moment? It’s a
pretty crazy trend to witness at the
moment.
Back in the day we used to look up to
the best American freestyle riders and
we only used to see their best tricks in
videos. Being so far from that scene, I
think we practiced really hard because
we thought we had to ride at that level
all the time.
The first time I went to the US and I
rode with a few of the top guys at the
time. I’m not going to name them, but
yeah, there were hardly any banging
tricks getting thrown and I kinda felt like
I was showing off as I went through my
trick list like I always do.
Every time us Aussies ride we go
through our entire trick list to dirt. You
go to Europe and those guys are still
throwing their best tricks into a foam-
pit, even though they’ve landed them
