With that minor panic out of the way, race day
itself was close to perfection for Max. 1-1 ahead
of two world champs in Herlings and Febvre. Not
bad for someone who’d never won an MXGP moto,
and doing it in front of a riotous home crowd was
incredible. Can’t see Max ever having to buy a drink
at the Nations again.
£ With how close Max Anstie and Jeff Herlings ran in
the final round of the MXGP, I probably should have
expected to see the two of them leading the line at
Matterley. Max’s luck has never been the best at the
Nations, and a mid-air collision in quali on Saturday
looked like disappointment might be on the way. A
back-marker cut across Anstie mid-whip, throwing
down both riders hard. My heart sank thinking I was
watching the end of Team GB’s weekend, but Max
brushed himself off and was straight back on the
bike – losing only a couple of spots and qualifying a
respectable fourth.
