The jumps
Regardless of whether you ride moto, BMX or MTB,
there’s a good chance you’ve fantasised about
riding the gloriously shaped Farm Jam dirt hits.
These heavenly hips and booters are quickly
becoming things of legend across the world.
Ask anyone what the first thing they think of is
when you mention Farm Jam, and it’s practically
guaranteed that they’ll say “sick dirt jumps”.
Both the FMX and pushy courses have been
carefully sculpted and moulded since the first
instalment in 2007. Then the FMX course was
draped over the rolling hills in a similar fashion,
but over the years new features and options were
added, downramps lengthened and steepened
and the kickers lipped up and pulled back.
Meanwhile the BMX/MTB trails seem to be a
living, breathing entity; every year they constantly
evolve and move, with new lines appearing under
the careful, watchful eye and shovel blade of Brett
Frew and a healthy band of passionate local riders.
The equality
This is one of the keys to what makes Farm Jam
such an amazing event. Name another FMX, BMX
or MTB contest anywhere in the world where wideeyed contest virgins line up and ride with some of
the biggest names in two-wheeled action sports.
The 2014 FMX contest saw the likes of 17-year-old
local high-school kid, Ben “Peewee” Wilson, hit the
FMX course with 2012 Red Bull X-Fighters World
Champion, Levi Sherwood, Brazilian X Games athlete
Fred Kyrillos and some of Australia’s finest up-andcomers.
The same theme continued
through the pushy contests:
Youtube sensation and cult MTB
hero Kelly McGarry, X Games
BMX gold medalist Anthony
Napolitan, Nitro Circus star
Brandon Loupos and on-fire
UK MTB shredder Matt Jones
rode with the likes of Australian
no-namer Bill Green (who pulled
a perfect Double Backflip out of
nowhere in his first-ever contest),
and a whole swag of local Kiwi
huckers and first-timers.
Despite these seemingly
lopsided match-ups, there is
no power hierarchy. Instead,
there’s a tangible aura of mutual
respect and camaraderie as new
friendships are born, longstanding
mateships are strengthened and
friendly old rivalries are either sparked or reignited. u
