2. Pierre
Auguste
Renoir
Pierre-Auguste Renoir was born in 1841
in Limoges. In 1844 his family moved to
Paris. He studied at the “École des Be-
aux-Arts” with Monet, Sisley and Bazil-
le, and he knew Pissarro and Cézanne.
He used to go out to paint with Monet,
Sisley and Bazille, searching for a more
direct approach to the nature. In 1867
he lived with Bazille. In this period he
got influences from Courbet and De-
lacroix. Afterwards, he began to go to
“Café Guerbois”, he knew Manet, he set
the principles of impressionism with Mo-
net, and his interest in the study of light
grew more. In fact, he painted with him
in Argenteuil. In 1874, he exposed his
paintings at the first impressionist exhi-
bition. In this period his subjects began
to be less defined: the light seems to cut
the shapes into little pieces. His most fa-
mous painting of this period is “Bal au
moulin de la Galette” (1876). In 1879, he
showed “Madame Charpentier and Her
Children” at the Salon, but he didn’t par-
ticipate at the fourth impressionist exhi-
bition. This painting gaves more atten-
tion to the sketch and is more studied.
