MEETINGS & EVENTS PHOTO COURTESY OF THE SOCIETY FOR COSMETIC CHEMISTS Taiwo Koyejo Spotlights Fragrance Safety at SCC’s 72nd Scientific Meeting & Showcase On December 12, 2018, Taiwo Koyejo, Ph.D., MBA, Chief Regulatory Scientist for Fragrance Creators Association presented at the Society of Cosmetic Chemists’ (SCC’s) 72nd Annual Scientific Meeting & Technolo- gy Showcase, held at the Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel. In her session, “Responsibility Makes Scents: Fragrance Safety and Over- sight in the United States,” Koyejo provided an overview of the fragrance industry and its rigorous safety system—noting that fragrances are among the most highly tested ingredients in the consumer product mar- ketplace and are subject to multiple levels of regulations and governmental oversight. In 32 | FRAGRANCENOTES.ORG | Issue 1, 2019 the United States, the fragrance industry is regulated by many government agencies and is subject to several federal, state, and local laws. Koyejo also shared how the fragrance industry engages in best practices through the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials’ (RIFM’s) safety program, whose assessments are reviewed by an independent Expert Panel, and the International Fragrance Association (IFRA), which uses the panel’s assessments to develop standards for the safe use of fragrance materials. She noted how the fragrance industry “works actively to build confidence in its products by collabo- rating with regulators and the supply chain to substantiate that products are safe for their intended uses.” Attendees came away with a clear picture of fragrance safety and regulatory requirements in the U.S. and the tools needed to support responsible compliance. They also gleaned an understanding of potential regulatory changes on the horizon as well as Fragrance Creators’ recent efforts to ensure sound science is reflected in regulations.
