Taiwo Koyejo Spotlights
Fragrance Safety at SCC’s 72nd
Scientific Meeting & Showcase
On December 12, 2018, Taiwo Koyejo,
Ph.D., MBA, Chief Regulatory Scientist for
Fragrance Creators Association presented at
the Society of Cosmetic Chemists’ (SCC’s)
72nd Annual Scientific Meeting & Technolo-
gy Showcase, held at the Sheraton New York
Times Square Hotel.
In her session, “Responsibility
Makes Scents: Fragrance Safety and Over-
sight in the United States,” Koyejo provided
an overview of the fragrance industry and
its rigorous safety system—noting that
fragrances are among the most highly tested
ingredients in the consumer product mar-
ketplace and are subject to multiple levels of
regulations and governmental oversight. In

the United States, the fragrance industry is
regulated by many government agencies and
is subject to several federal, state, and local
laws.
Koyejo also shared how the
fragrance industry engages in best practices
through the Research Institute for Fragrance
Materials’ (RIFM’s) safety program, whose
assessments are reviewed by an independent
Expert Panel, and the International Fragrance
Association (IFRA), which uses the panel’s
assessments to develop standards for the safe
use of fragrance materials. She noted how
the fragrance industry “works actively to
build confidence in its products by collabo-
rating with regulators and the supply chain
to substantiate that products are safe for their
intended uses.”
Attendees came away with a clear
picture of fragrance safety and regulatory
requirements in the U.S. and the tools needed
to support responsible compliance. They
also gleaned an understanding of potential
regulatory changes on the horizon as well as
Fragrance Creators’ recent efforts to ensure
sound science is reflected in regulations.
Dedicated to the advancement of
cosmetic science, SCC strives to increase and
disseminate scientific information through its
meetings and publications. The 73rd Scientif-
ic Meeting will take place December 17 & 18,
2019. Learn more at scconline.org.
