offer the Holy Sacrifice on the altar ... “ In spite of his torment during his student days, his old security of being called upon by God was shining again. And he added a stanza of a song by Sr. Maria Regina Most: To Mary: In your dear hands I lay mine without fear. Take me with you; you know the way he went. There was never a heart that burned for him like yours. And no love recognized as yours for his. Trust in Mary, which is expressed here, was in harmony with Fr. Henkes and the sacrificial thought in the lines. Such practices and beliefs were not alien to the new priest. Fr. Henkes, now inwardly renewed, could not have known how he would ever experience and suffer as he had. He had the security of his vocation again, as he had in Schönstatt. He also had missionary zeal and a commitment to his people. And always, he had the dark scar of those six months with the military. 19
