THE FUTURE SCENE
AREA OF CONCERN
About the Future Scene:
A Future Scene in Global Issues Problem Solving (GIPS) is an imagined description of a possible
future, a ‘what if’’ scenario which narrows the general topic area to a particular place, time and
series of events. It is a spring board for student discussion and understanding of the issues:
who, what, how, why do events occur?
In Community Problem Solving (CmPS) the scenario is set in the present and highlights an issue
which the team feels it needs to address and find possible solutions for. The CmPS scenario is
known as the Area of Concern.
What makes analysing the Future Scene challenging?
Students need to read the scenario carefully. It is easy to misread and misinterpret the Future
Scene which can send problem solvers off on a tangent instead of focussing on the critical
issues. Students should closely examine the last paragraph of the scenario where the charge will
tell them exactly what they are to do.
