Temperature Collecting Procedure

by Eden Petrilla

Air Temperature:

Objective: Find the temperature of the air accurately.

Materials:

-Thermometer

-Basic knowledge of math

Procedure:

1.Place the thermometer in a shaded area.

2.Wait at least a minute before reading the temperature, and make sure the mercury/alcohol column remains stationary before ready and recording the temperature.

3.Record the temperature in degrees Celsius.

Stream Temperature:

Objective: Find the temperature of the stream accurately

Materials:

-Thermometer

-Basic knowledge of math

Procedure:

1.Submerge the bulb of the thermometer into the stream.

2.Wait at least one minute if the mercury/alcohol is still moving.

3.Read the temperature while the thermometer is still in the water if possible or as quickly as possible after removing it from the water.

4.Record the temperature in degrees Celsius.

Width Collecting Procedure

Objective: Collect the width of Fox Run

Materials:

-Two stakes

-Piece of cord

-Four clothes pins

-Tape measure

Procedure:

1.Locate the section of the stream that was previously used in past procedures.

2.Drive one stake into the ground on each side of the stream in the upstream end of the section.

3.Attach a cord to one stake, stretch it over to the opposite side of the stream, and tie it around the other stake. Be sure to make the cord as taunt as possible, so that the cord is not saggy.

4.Locate the exact edges of the stream and mark those two locations using clothes pins. Place these pins on the cord directly above the stream edges.

5.Measure the length from wet edge to wet edge or clothes pin to clothes pin with a tape measure.

6.Record the collected data in meters.

7.To check to confirm the measurement is accurate, divid the width by 5 and then use this number to place 4 clothes pins equally distanced on the cord. Next, use the tape measure to measure the distance calculated from a wet edge clothes pin and repeat the measurement for each clothes pin added.
