OPEN EYES Continued from page 22 INTERNATIONAL OUTREACH Aaron Hunter never planned to be a missionary. But God had different plans for him. When Aaron Hunter was growing up, he thought missionaries were losers who could not get a job. “Don’t get me wrong. I loved Jesus and wanted to preach just like my mom and dad,” Aaron says. “I made ‘Aaron-size’ pulpits around the house so I could preach to thousands, even though I was the only one in the room.” God filled him with the Holy Spirit when he was 8 years old and began a process of transformation that changed everything. Aaron learned to speak Spanish and answered God’s call to Latin America, you guessed it, as a missionary. Today, he oversees Foursquare’s NextGen ministry for an entire continent. “I pray that people will encounter God like I did so He changes the course of their lives,” Aaron says. “God transformed my attitude about missionaries and turned me into one. He turned my indifference about speaking Spanish into fluency so I will passionately share the gospel.” THE NEXT GENERATION The future leaders of the church aren’t just sitting in college classrooms— they’re in your children’s ministry. Imagine a church where the ages of those who lead on a Sunday morning are as diverse as the roles in which they serve. This is the case at Grace Covenant (Cornelius Foursquare Church) in Cornelius, N.C. Acknowledging the leadership crisis that the church at large is facing, Senior Pastor Farrell Lemings took a bold step in 2016. One Sunday morning, led by the Holy Spirit, he visited his church’s children’s ministry. There he saw young children and teens naturally displaying leadership talents, and he realized this is where leaders are formed—it doesn’t just happen at the college level. So, he and his staff began a simple, intentional effort to “identify, coach, give opportunity and applaud” the young people who were identified as having leadership potential. And the result has led to many wins for the kingdom—in kid’s lives as well as in his congregation.
