PREPARATORY SCHOOL

Beyond winning and losing

The value of sport in young people ’ s lives is far greater than the score at the end of the match , richer than the trophies , ribbons and accolades and more rewarding than the season headlines . Ongoing participation in sport and physical activity into adulthood has a positive affect on both physical and mental wellbeing .
The Australian Sports Commission ’ s report into the state of Australian sport identified the importance of promoting the social and health benefits of sport to young people , fostering an inclusive and developmentally appropriate framework as the main drivers of long-term participation in physical
activity . When delivered in this manner , sport develops resilience , autonomy and self-efficacy by providing opportunities for young people to learn more about themselves .
The philosophy of sport at GGS is to do just that . We foster opportunities for all students at every age and stage , and seek to give our students choice and responsibility . Having coaches who deliver sport within the framework of our philosophy is an integral part of this process , we are excited to welcome the following exceptional coaches to the sports team this year .
Our new coaches Mr Sam Beard recently moved to WA from New Zealand and coaches the 1st XV alongside Johan Bardoul . Sam is also a former professional rugby player and has played and coached in New Zealand , the United Kingdom and America . With Johan coordinating the rugby program across the School and Sam supporting the coaching at all levels , we have a truly dynamic program at GGS this year and we are excited about their contribution to the School . Johan and Sam also coach the 1st XV at Perth Bayswater .
Mr Jack Rolfe is owner and director of The Coaching Lab and the brains behind Match Play Cards which are used in sporting codes all over the world to foster decision-making and ownership of learning in sport for young people . Jack is involved across the School in our hockey program but will be a regular face across
the Preparatory program this year . Jack coordinated the Year 4 program in Term 1 .
Ms Jamie Duncanson joins the soccer team bringing both her current playing experience in the Women ’ s State League Premier Division and a qualification as a teacher to the team . Jamie also coaches in the senior program , coordinating the girls ’ soccer program and as coach of the PSA 3rd XI .
