SENIOR SCHOOL
ACC Cross Country Carnival
With just under 4,500 students from across the State competing in the ACC Cross Country Carnival in June , it was an impressive day . Guildford Grammar School competed with just under 30 students across all age groups . It was great to see camaraderie amongst our students ; some running together , helping each other out and cheering each other on .
A special mention goes to Emily Anderson ( 7SG ) and Jacob Howard ( 11Be ). Emily finished third in the U13 Female 3k category - ninth across both U13 and U14 , with a time of 11:33.06 . Jacob finished ninth in the Open U19 Male 4k category with a time of 13:50.13 . This was a fantastic effort and result considering the strong field of competitors .

Rugby camp

During the April school holidays , the senior Rugby squad travelled to Albany for a pre-season camp accompanied by new coaches Mr Johan Bardoul , Mr Sam Beard , returning coach Mr Sam Thornley , Rugby TiC Mr Paul Stenner and transport manager Mr Danny De Hoog .
The tour started in style with a stop off to visit the Cowcher family in Williams who kindly agreed to host the boys to break up the journey . We were extremely grateful for their excellent hospitality . On arrival in Albany , the challenge of setting up tents and swags ensued before a light training session to shake off the cobwebs from the journey . The base at Kalgan River Caravan Park was idyllic with the pitches being right next to the river and the first night ended with stories and games around the fire pit . Day two was when the serious training started with both morning and afternoon sessions . The post-training cool-down took place in the Southern Ocean with the boys braving the cold water to display their bombie skills from the nearby jetty !
Little did we know that day two still had a surprise up its sleeve . The boys took to their tents that evening with the threat of a storm front coming through . ‘ Storm Dard ’ as the players named it certainly left its mark , resulting in the team being moved to dormitory accommodation at 1.00am in the middle of a torrential downpour , before waking up to see their tents smashed . The spirit of the team was shown that night with everyone working together to make the best of a challenging situation . As a result of the weather , the trial match was postponed . A big thanks to Great Southern Grammar School for hosting our training sessions and being so accommodating by opening their gym for the wet weather sessions , which included a unique training technique involving plate balancing .
The final full day of the tour saw the intersquad trial match billed as the Battle of Bardoul vs Beard . This was the players ’ opportunity to stake their claim for a starting position in the first game of the season . And it didn ’ t disappoint . It was a fully-blooded affair with players putting aside their friendships and giving their all . It came down to the wire with Team Bardoul scoring the winning try with the final play of the match .
That afternoon saw the players visit the National ANZAC Museum to pay tribute to the those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country including a number of Old Guildfordians . The visit was also made to further understand the Guildford rugby principles of pride , mateship and courage , discipline and accountability . The afternoon also allowed the team to explore Albany including the natural wonders of the Gap , the Natural Bridge and the blow holes . Before enjoying our end of camp meal at the Earl of Spencer , a time for the players and coaches to share their favourite stories about the camp . One , which will have many legacies including a match move named after Danny because of the impression he created on the boys .
Thank you to the parent fundraising committee for the bake sale they hosted to raise money for the camp . Finally , the students were a credit to Guildford Grammar School and were complimented for their positivity and attitude wherever they went . It was a rewarding trip and one which will remain in our memories for a long time .
