FAREWELL TO OUR SENIOR CHAPLAIN

Farewell

Father Philip

A much-loved and lauded member of Guildford Grammar School , Father Philip Raymont ’ s dedication to his role as Senior Chaplain has been greatly appreciated . The outpouring of gratitude and the warm and often amusing anecdotes and recollections shared by students , staff , current and past parents and Old Guildfordians since the announcement of his leaving are clear examples of the esteem in which Philip is held .
Philip was a Lecturer , Fellow and Director of Studies in Education at Cambridge University prior to joining Guildford Grammar School in 2009 . He brought to our School his rural Australian roots , world experiences , love of culture and the arts , a wonderful sense of humour and extensive knowledge of education , in particular in residential environments .
At assemblies , students shared delightful anecdotes and reflections on what Philip means to them . Words they used to describe him are : wise , compassionate , humble , chatty , hilarious , welcoming and open . Staff , particularly those who have worked closely with him , shared their great admiration for his excellent knowledge , guidance , humour and impactful leadership .
The Principal , Anne Dunstan acknowledged the pastoral support Father Philip has given her , his understanding of the great joys and challenges of school leadership , and how he has often been a listening ear and a source of insight and encouragement to her .
Father Philip has led the spiritual life of our School with passion and enthusiasm . He is expert at understanding the many and differing needs of our School Community and has a beautiful knack of being able to engage equally with students , parents , staff and Old Guildfordians . We have indeed been blessed by his presence .
We wish Philip great joy in the next chapter of his life , as Priest-in-charge of the Parishes of Beverley and Brookton , Quairading and York . His gifts and dedication in the service of God and to others will no doubt have a significant impact on this new community – it is right that they are shared beyond our School .
Thank you , Father Philip , for being so giving , joyful , generous and wise . Farewell .
