Duke of Edinburgh ’ s International Award

The Duke of Edinburgh ’ s International Award was founded in the UK in 1956 by HRH the late Duke of Edinburgh , with the aim of encouraging the involvement of young people in sport , co-curricular activities and community service . The Award rapidly grew in popularity and was adopted in other countries , including Australia in 1959 .
Guildford Grammar School was one of the first organisations to begin delivering the Award in WA , in 1964 . More than 1.3 million young people are currently involved in the Award worldwide , in around 130 different countries .
Despite this long history , the structure of the Award remains largely unchanged . It consists of four sections : Physical Recreation , Skills , Community Service and the Adventurous Journey . For each of the first three sections , participants decide on a goal to work towards , then log their involvement in their chosen activity for a minimum of three months , before their progress is documented by their Assessor . For the Adventurous Journey , they take part in a bushwalk or similar as part of a small group , often through the School Outdoor Education camps or via the Cadet Unit .
Our students are able to take part in a wide range of sporting and co-curricular activities during a typical week , including music , drama , community service , army cadets , debating and public speaking , in addition to the extensive after school sporting program . These activities encourage self-confidence , improve physical fitness and promote a healthy and active lifestyle that will last well after the students leave school .
Whilst these activities have many benefits of their own , if they are incorporated into the Duke of Edinburgh ’ s International Award , they can form part of an endorsed course that can contribute towards Year 12 graduation and is well-regarded by employers and universities throughout Australia and overseas .
Guildford Grammar School students consistently achieve success through their
Award participation , with the School named amongst the top 10 Award Centres in the State in terms of completions for the last four years .
Guildford Grammar School has increased both registrations and completions for the Duke of Edinburgh ’ s International Award over the past three years . The School ranked 13 for Registrations and 7 for Completion out of the 99 WA Award Centres in 2020 .

Despite the sad passing of HRH the Duke of Edinburgh earlier this year , the Award will continue to grow in the future at Guildford Grammar School , and as we approach the 65th anniversary of the Award in Australia , and the 60th anniversary of the Award at Guildford Grammar School in 2024 .
