Student agency – delivering a vibrant and engaging Co-Curricular Program
Over the course of the last three years , students in Year 10-12 have been instrumental in developing the Friday Activities Program . The activities available to our most senior students are many and vary term to term . Some activities are academically focused , others experience focused ; all are based on student feedback and interest .
The Friday Co-curricular Activities Program started off with a bang for 2021 . Students engaged in activities such as Band Rehearsal , Cadets , Become a Barista !, Drama and Defensive Driving lessons .
The School values the importance of a diverse and well-rounded education and the range of experiences on offer to our students extend well beyond the classroom . The program for students in Year 10-12 encourages them to take advantage of extraordinary opportunities and allows them to develop new skills , improve talents and pursue current interests .
It Just Got Real ! Year 10 students experience four life skill-focused activities over the course of the year including Keys for Life , First Aid and CPR , Community Service and It Just Got Real !
It Just Got Real is a new Friday Activity for 2021 which was developed with a group of students interested in seeing more ‘ real-life ’ activities on offer . Students suggested that in the senior years ( beyond Year 10 ) there isn ’ t a targeted health-focused curriculum and they felt the Friday Activities space was a good time to offer students the opportunity to explore and discuss topics that otherwise are not covered in great detail throughout the Health curriculum in the lower years . Through these discussions , It Just Got Real ! was developed .
Christina Self , founder of Red Ginger Wellness , is a public health professional who provides student and staff workshops covering issues surfacing through academic research on current Australian Youth Sexual Culture . Christina presents in many schools around Perth , and is our main presenter for the It Just Got Real ! sessions . Topics for these sessions include :
• Gender and sexuality diversity
• Baby Think It Over activity
• Sexual negotiation and consent
• Sexting and the law
• Pornography
• Sexual identity and body image
• Respectful relationships .
Sexual behaviour is extremely multifaceted and its influences are often difficult to isolate as they all work in conjunction with each other . Such influences include ( but are not limited to ), cultural values , family experience , peer group and most significantly right now , mass media .
Teaching young people to think critically about their sexual journey , giving them as much current knowledge and skills as possible , in an environment free from judgment or coercion , and to equip them along the way is our primary role as educators , and one we committed to .
