Politics and Law with the Hon Ken Wyatt AM MP

The Hon Ken Wyatt AM MP , Minister for Indigenous Australians was guest speaker at an incursion for our Year 11 and 12 Politics and Law classes during May .
The Politics and Law ATAR course provides a study of the processes of decision-making concerning society ’ s collective future . It aims to develop the knowledge of the principles , structures , institutions and processes of political and legal systems , primarily in Australia . It brings together the executive , legislative and judicial branches of government to demonstrate how society is governed and how each branch of government is held to account . It examines the democratic principles practised in Australia and makes comparisons with other political and legal systems .
During his address to the students , Mr Wyatt discussed a number of important aspects of his ministerial role , including
The Hon Ken Wyatt AM MP
some key reflections of the role of the Constitution in determining policy , and shared insights with the students about the plans of national Cabinet .
More important than his address though , was his openness to take part in a Guildford Grammar School version of ‘ Question Time ’, where our students asked the Minister questions related to current Australian politics and policies , as well as questions where the Minster ’ s lived experience in the House of Representatives could bring to light their course materials . The Federal Budget , the Government ’ s COVID-19 response , the plans for a Federal ICAC , school funding models , and the Government ’ s commitment to ‘ Closing the Gap ’ were only some of the extensive range of topics covered .
The Guildford Grammar School Politics and Law classes , and the School more broadly thanked the Hon Minister for the generosity of his time and efforts , and also our Year 11 and 12 PALS teacher , Mr Harry Dobson , for making the arrangements for such a rich and interactive learning experience .

Boodjar Bidi Youth Art Group exhibit at Sculpture by the Sea

From 188 applicants across 26 countries , Guildford Grammar School ’ s Boodjar Bidi Youth Art Group students were successfully chosen to contribute their amazing artwork at the Sculpture by the Sea exhibition , held annually at Cottesloe Beach . This was an an excellent acknowledgement of their skills and we are so proud !
The group wanted to enhance the survival of dreaming stories related to Mudurup and the Perth Region . The artwork , titled The Little Boy and the Whale – Biindiirrwoorr , was created in consultation with Traditional Owners to tell the story of Biindiirrwoorr and Mangalla the Mamung ( whale ).
As well as showcasing their work , the Boodjar Bidi Youth Art Group also opened the Sculpture by the Sea exhibition with traditional dance .
We congratulate all students involved and Indigenous Program Coordinator , Mr Josh Casey .
