FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Drake Brockman , she attended the School in the late 1890s . She went on to live a most extraordinary life , with an ability to immerse herself in many pursuits . A community worker , writer and philanthropist , she was Lady Mayoress of Adelaide in 1919-1921 and the first Commissioner of the Girl Guides Association in that state . She founded the mining company , Tantalite Ltd ; she formed partnerships in the US and UK to support her mining interests , as well as a syndicate to mine wolfram in Central Australia , and in World War II her tantalum was used in radar technology . Now there is a life well lived and a community well served !
Similarly , the inspirational story of the daring and creative Old Guildfordian , Ben Carlin ; adventurer , mining and military engineer , and first and only person to circumnavigate the world in an amphibious vehicle known as Half-Safe . This was an incredible feat – 17,000 kilometres by sea and 62,000 kilometres by land during a 10-year journey . Carlin ’ s story is an audacious one of self-motivation and innovation . Half-Safe , the sturdy yellow vehicle housed on the School campus , is genuinely loved by our students , many of whom walk past it multiple times each day .

with our community being welcomed in , and our students and staff engaging more broadly out . The recent 125th celebration dinner , the Long Table Dinner Under the Stars , was a prime example of this . Old Guildfordians , current and past parents and staff all celebrating together , honouring our past and collectively contributing to build our future . Everyone is part of our Guildford Grammar School family .
We will continue to be invitational . I encourage all associated with our wonderful community to be involved in our 125th celebrations and beyond , because all are welcome and valued and because the amazing opportunities we provide for our current and future students , who are going to be the next Deborah Drake Brockmans or Ben Carlins , are simply not possible without your support .
