Mr Casey – our ‘ Rising Star ’

Congratulations to Mr Joshua Casey ( Indigenous Program Coordinator , Technology and Enterprise Teacher ), who was named as one of The Educator magazine ’ s ‘ Rising Stars 2021 ’ recipients .
Appointed as our Indigenous Program Coordinator last year , Mr Casey has been able to incorporate many skills and relationships from his former professional role as an architect working with the National Trust to enhance both our Indigenous Program , and our Design and Technology courses .
Last year , he was highly successfully in implementing a number of new and impactful initiatives through the Boodjar Bidi program , the main focus being ‘ using art to capture / find voice ’. These have included :
• National Reconciliation Week initiatives where students put together a reflection gallery , which was initially displayed in our Chapel of St Mary and St George . Thanks to Mr Casey leveraging relationships with Screen West and Development WA , these students ’ reflections were broadcast in Yagan Square in the city during NAIDOC Week .
• Josh revised our in-school NAIDOC week activities to include : – Indigenous students teaching Art and
Music workshops in the Preparatory School .
– Students working on paperbark self-portraits combining indigenous artistic styles and traditional materials .
Mr Joshua Casey with students from the Boojdar Bidi Indigenous Program .
– Hosting a movie night featuring indigenous dance , the screening of a documentary focusing on indigenous Australian history , and foods prepared by students and incorporating Indigenous ingredients .
• Successfully entering a submission for artworks by our Boodjar Bidi students , telling stories of the local Indigenous people featured as part of the Sculpture by the Sea exhibition .
Congratulations to Josh for his leadership and initiative and for this wonderful recognition .
