Percy Henn was born in Manchester in 1865 and was the son of a clergyman and schoolmaster . Percy attended Christ ’ s Hospital as a student and then went on to Oxford University . Percy Henn left Western Australia in 1905 to return to England . Three years later he was ready for Bishop Riley to entice him back to Western Australia .
Well before Percy arrived in WA , he threw himself into preliminary work on Guildford Grammar School . He obtained detailed information from Rev ’ d McClemans about the two-year deal for the Church to buy the school from Charles Harper . A suggestion was made for him to raise money while in England to build a chapel for Guildford . Rev ’ d McClemans advised ‘ A chapel was not necessary as the parish church was sufficient , except we build a chapel with dormitories on top ’. Henn took it upon himself to raise the money for the chapel and the famous story of how Cecil Oliverson donated the money is well-known .
