SENIOR SCHOOL

Rugby pre-season

The 2019 rugby season was always going to be one to look forward to . It didn ’ t start well , with a few injuries leaving players out for most of the season before it had even started . However , after some hard work during the pre-season , the squad was looking sharp and eager to get back onto the field .
Following a week ’ s rest during the holidays , we were thrown straight into rugby camp . The camp began with some tough training in preparation for the Festival of Rugby at Scotch College
Our first game of the Festival was against Christ Church Grammar School . This was a good wake up call to everyone in the team , as the level of intensity and pressure playing at 1st Team level may have been a surprise for some of the newer team members .
After a day of rest for ANZAC Day , we found ourselves in our second fixture against Trinity College . This again was a tough outfit , but we showed much improvement from the previous game . After some exhausting days at the Festival , it was great to see Ned Sullivan ( 11Fr ) selected to represent the Festival Invitational side against Newington College , who had travelled from New South Wales .
Ned made a great account of himself on the field in both fixtures , playing alongside some of the best junior players in the state . He was omni-present and tenacious in defence . What made the occasion was the fact that the majority of the Guildford Grammar School Rugby Squad travelled with Ned to watch him play on the Saturday , even though they did not have any formal commitment to the Festival that day
Going forward , it is clear that we still have plenty to work on to develop our rugby this season . There were some great elements in the pre-season games , including tries from Ned Sullivan and Spencer Cresswell ( 12Ha ). I am excited to be playing in this squad heading into what could and should be a very successful season of rugby .
Aidan Crummey ( 12SG ) Vice-Captain of Rugby
