Can you remember the undefeated 1972 2nd Year A XVIII football team ?
It was a credit to the 2nd Year A ’ s in 1972 that they were able to maintain their unbeaten record . Any team that remains undefeated after thirteen games in an intense competition should have felt justly proud .
The team did not suddenly become a winning combination in 1972 , but were obviously very much that for previous years . The big hurdle was as always Aquinas at their home ground . The Aquinas team had not been beaten in its previous three years of competitive football . After the first five minutes of the game when Aquinas had kicked two of their total of four goals to a zero score for Guildford , it looked like this was going to be a fourth unbeaten year for them . It was the spirit of the Guildford team that finally won the game by four points . Guildford kept Aquinas scoreless in the third quarter even though they kicked with the help of a strong wind .
It was also the Guildford spirit which enabled the team to continue their winning streak later on in the season when the flu took control of the School . In one match which Guildford won by five goals , seven of the regular players were missing .
