SENIOR SCHOOL

Year 7

Perspectives

The transition from primary to secondary school can be challenging for students as they adapt to new routines , moving across our large campus and learning to work with lots of new teachers . We asked some of our new
Year 7 students to tell us how they found their first term in the Senior School .
Kelsi Brennan Even though I have been a student at Guildford Grammar School since Year 1 , starting at the Senior School , for me , was like starting at a new school . I ’ d gotten used to being in the senior year of the Preparatory School but here I was the newbie ! I already knew so many people when I entered the Senior School but there were still so many people I hadn ’ t met , therefore I made it my goal on the first day to at least meet everyone in my mentor group . I did , and it turns out it wasn ’ t as hard as I thought it would be . After two days I knew almost every girl in my grade , or at least I knew who they were , and most of the boys .
Being the chatty person I am , I have made some new amazing friends and cemented my already strong relationships with others , all of whom I know I can count on to be there for me , as I will be for them .
It was really weird at first because I was the only one in my ‘ friend group ’ who knew a lot of people . So I was always asked ‘ who ’ s that kid or teacher ’. I didn ’ t know who was who , where the classes were , what was expected of us , or how to use those lockers . It was a new experience for me too , but together we have worked it out !
Up until the Year 7 camp , mentor group was pretty much girls on one side of the class and boys on the other , with a few chats in between . When we were away for five days and four nights without our technology , we actually became really good friends , had real belly laughs together and learnt a lot about each other . We would just sit on a log and talk to each other , find out who liked what , what was important to us and what was not , playing games and sharing a joke and a smile . Through these little moments we learnt so much about each other and by the end of camp we had all become super close .
Senior School may take a bit of getting used to , but it comes around pretty quick . So , if I had some advice to give any newcomers it would be : 1 . Don ’ t be shy and get involved . If you are shy there will always be kids like me and others who will ensure you are included .
2 . Get to know as many people as you can , especially those who are in your mentor group because you will be stuck with each other for the next six years !
Patrick Mason-Chambers For me the transition into Senior School was a bit shaky . I was a little worried when I first came to the School but the staff and older students helped me settle in really easily and quickly . The first few weeks went by super-fast and we were given lots of tests . The study for me was hard because I hadn ’ t really learned to do it properly . If I had a couple of tips for new students they would be : 1 . Don ’ t worry about anything 2 . Think about putting a good study plan in place after the first couple of weeks 3 . Come to school fresh-minded every day
My most memorable moment so far was the inter-house athletics carnival . The adrenaline of the races and the atmosphere of all the houses cheering is amazing ! The students are so passionate and supportive of their fellow housemates .
The aspect I like most about Guildford Grammar School is the great culture and the fact that each House has its own pingpong and pool tables that you can play on at recess and lunch . It really does feel like a real home where you can just relax and hang out with your friends .
Overall I really love the feel of Guildford Grammar School .
