Ilene Aveling

Development Manager
In January this year we welcomed Ilene Aveling to the School as the Development Manager . This new role is responsible for developing a philanthropic strategy to support the School and Ilene ’ s first task is to run a capital campaign to raise funds for our new boarding facilities .
Ilene has a strong professional background in development and has held Business Development roles in Perth and London . Her philanthropic and sponsorship career started when she was employed as the Business Development Manager at the Perth International Arts Festival . After a short stint overseas , Ilene started her own fundraising consultancy in Perth , working with a range of not-for-profit organisations .
Ilene ’ s initial work on the capital campaign involves a great deal of research , working closely with the School ’ s Archivist and the Old Guildfordians Association . She is also eager to meet current donors and cultivate new supporters .
“ This is a remarkable place to work . It ’ s a workplace where the staff embody the values they are instilling in the students . The School is both traditional and progressive and is not just about the academics ; but rounding and grounding the students .”
Outside of work Ilene is a keen writer who hopes to be published . She also enjoys bush walking , cooking and gardening .
If you have any interest in being involved in the capital campaign for boarding , please contact Ilene on 9377 8554 or Ilene . aveling @ ggs . wa . edu . au .

The Joy of Giving

For Guildford Grammar School to continue to flourish and Go Forward our philanthropy strategy must also continue to grow . The raising of funds through capital campaigns , annual giving and a bequest program is essential to achieving our vision of offering the best for our students : scholarships , refurbishing old buildings and building new ones – it is vital for our future .
Guildford Grammar School endeavours to keep tuition fees as low as possible , but fees alone do not cover all operating expenses or building developments . Similar to most schools , tuition payments only cover about 60-80 % of those expenses , and therefore schools must use fundraising efforts to secure a financially healthy future .
Definition Of Philanthropy Based on the Greek words “ philos ” and “ anthropos ”, philanthropy literally means “ love of mankind ”
The Guildford Grammar School Foundation has , since 1974 , provided a large portion of funds to meet the needs of scholarships – a pillar of the School ’ s ethos – and the essential building program required to house and educate our students .
One of the biggest challenges to building a giving culture is that it is often perceived as a necessary evil instead of being strategic and transformational - and yet it is often donors who are responsible for enabling major change and impact . The restoration of the Chapel of St Mary and St George ( damaged following the Meckering earthquake ) was entirely funded by the Old Guildfordians and the School Community .
To grow a successful giving culture the School Community must value giving and donors as an important part of delivering the School ’ s vision . Old Guildfordians , past and current parents , staff and students can all play a part as advocates , champions and donors . We welcome your participation as we move into a new phase of fundraising – it ’ s fun !
I am thrilled to be working at Guildford Grammar School and to be part of this special community and I look forward to helping the School move into this next phase of building financial independence and security . In my long fundraising career , I have come across many quotes on the topic , but this is my favourite :
Fundraising is the gentle art of teaching the joy of giving .
