PR E PA R ATORY S C HO OL
What makes a good leader?
Now that the Preparatory School leaders have had a semester to settle in their roles,
we thought we would ask them to share their thoughts on what makes a good leader.
Being courageous means being willing to
take risks in achieving goals even when you
don’t know the outcome.
What have you enjoyed the most about
being a school leader?
I have really enjoyed being able to speak
to the school about a topic that I think is
important. I have also enjoyed working with
a lot of different students and teachers,
which I would not have been able to do if
I wasn’t a leader. My favourite part about
being a leader is having the opportunity to
work with Mr Budler more often.
What advice would you give other
students considering a leadership role?
Preparatory School Captain
Emma Pittman.
Emma Pittman (6T)
My advice to anyone who is quiet but is
considering a leadership role is that it is
okay to be quiet, but it is important to get
out of your comfort zone.
Preparatory School Captain Benjamin Tang (6T)
What do you think are the most
important attributes of a leader? Head Boy
Integrity and respect, which are also a part
of our school’s core values. Also the ability
to inspire and positive energy are important.
What have you enjoyed most about
being a school leader?
I am most proud of being able to buddy
up with our Kindy year group this year and
see how they go about their daily routine.
They are our future and I am honoured to
be able hang out with this special group of
Guildfordians.
What do you think are the most
important attributes of a leader?
To me, a good leader is democratic in the
decisions they make. Listening to people is
important but you also should be able to
value different ideas. It is also important
to be confident in what you do and in
who you are. In the world some people
will support you and some won’t but that
shouldn’t stop you from doing what you are
doing. It is up to you to lead by example but
be proud of who you are.
Benjamin Tang – Head Boy.
What have you enjoyed most about
being a school leader?
Being a leader is quite enjoyable for me.
I have been able to work with students
that have great qualities themselves. I have
enjoyed working with not only the teachers,
but the other student leaders as well. I have
learnt a lot from GGS Preparatory School
and everybody in it.
What advice can you give other
students considering a leadership role?
A piece of advice from me to anybody
seeking a leadership role is to be confident.
If you get selected but feel like someone else
deserved it more, you shouldn’t because you
have been selected and should be proud of
that. Remember though, to never abuse your
power. A good leader lead s from the back
not the front. That means to guide people
not to order people around.
What advice can you give other
students considering a leadership role?
My advice to someone considering a
leadership role would be to show a strong
School spirit and support your peers in what
they do whether it be watching them play
sports or attending our school events. It is
also important to support the wider school
community, be supportive, and caring, be
responsible, and be a good role model.

Head Girl
What do you think are the most
important attributes of a leader?
I think the most important attributes of a
leader are to be committed, passionate and
have courage. Being committed is really
important. As a leader there will be things
you have to do that require commitment.
Being passionate is important because you
need to be enthusiastic about what you do.
