Darlot Cup success

The 1st XI Cricket Team ’ s hopes of winning the Darlot Cup were high following a victory in the T20 Competition in Term 4 of 2017 . Not since 1986 and the playing days of Brendon Julian ( SG 85-87 ) and Quentin Edmunds ( St 82-86 ) had Guildford Grammar School won this prestigious trophy . This all changed on Saturday 10 March when the Cup was returned to the School ! Director of Cricket , Mr Colin Dymock , takes us through the season leading up to the win .
Round One Aquinas were dismissed for a competitive 231 thanks to the tireless Freddie Cassell ( 12SG ) and Jordan Clark ( 12Ha ) with three wickets each and Oscar Anderson ( 12Fr ) taking two . After a solid start , Jordan Clark ( 12Ha ) and Brad Marlborough ( 11Wb ) combined in a match-winning , recordbreaking and at times brutal partnership of 137 . Jordan ’ s dazzling innings of 118 ( 11 fours and 5 sixes ) completely demoralised the opposition bowlers , whilst Brad compiled a vital 54 runs ( 8 fours and 2 sixes ). The team total of 7-374 was the icing on the cake of a dominant team performance .
Round Two Fine innings of 62 by opener Sam Weston ( 12He ) and 52 by Captain , Connor Smith ( 12Ha ) set up a sound total of 9-234 declared . Scotch fell well short with 77 due to the sensational swing bowling of Freddie Cassell ( 12SG ) attaining the excellent figures of 4-11 . Two wickets were taken by Digby Crossland ( 11SG ), Laurie Todd ( 12SG ) and Oscar Anderson ( 12Fr ). Following on , Scotch were bowled out for 66 resulting in a superb outright victory . Jordan Clark ( 12Ha ) took 3-13 , supported by two wickets to Freddie Cassell ( 12SG ) and Digby Crossland ( 11SG ).
Round Three A nightmare start at Wesley had Guildford reeling at 3-1 but the team managed to grind out 140 runs with Laurie Todd ( 12SG ) top scoring with 29 . Another superb bowling
performance from Freddie Cassell ( 12SG ) with 4-12 knocked Wesley over for just 54 . Jordan Clark ( 12Ha ), Mackenzie Hall ( 10SG ) and Digby Crossland ( 11SG ) all chimed in with two wickets . A quick-fire unbeaten 71 from Connor Smith ( 12Ha ) and then another dominant team bowling performance led by Oscar Anderson ( 12Fr ) with 4-57 resulted in an incredible outright victory .
Round Four Guildford were on the ropes at 3-5 against Christ Church but recovery came in the form of a scintillating innings of 93 by Brad Marlborough ( 11Wb ) with 13 fours and 1 six . Brad combined with Connor Smith ( 12Ha ) ( 52 ) to put on 109 runs and then 85 runs with Kelly Jones ( 12He ) with 69 not out . Christ Church managed 187 with Freddie Cassell ( 12SG ) taking 4-13 and Connor Smith ( 12Ha ) and Oscar Anderson ( 12Fr ) also taking two wickets .
Round Five Laurie Todd ( 12SG ), Digby Crossland ( 11SG ) and Oscar Anderson ( 12Fr ) each took two wickets but Guildford were unable to prevent Hale from posting a strong total of 8-277 declared . The match finished in a nail-biting draw with Connor Smith ( 12Ha ) scoring 64 and Guildford reaching 8-220 .
Round Six A powerful bowling performance bundled Trinity out for 118 with Digby Crossland ( 11SG ) taking 3-14 , Jordan Clark ( 12Ha ) 3-26 and Laurie Todd ( 12SG ) 3-29 . Connor Smith ( 12Ha ) compiled a brilliant 137 ( 22 fours ) taking his season aggregate to 429 runs at an average of 71.5 - the 8th highest total in Guildford Grammar School ’ s history . With Kelly Jones ( 12He ) compiling 52 runs in support , the team totalled 8-311 - the highest total Guildford has ever scored against Trinity in the Darlot Cup competition .
Guildford completed the season a convincing 31 points ahead of the second placed school . The tactical nous , passionate approach and marvellous communication skills of Coach HD Ackerman were a key component in the team ’ s outstanding success . Thank you to all players , parents and coaches who contributed to a memorable and successful 2018 season .
