SENIOR SCHOOL
eV Challenge
The eV Challenge powered by Synergy is Australia’s longest running electric motorsport competition, first established in 2001.
The aim of the event is to have teams design, build, test and construct a small single seat electric vehicle. Powered by a limited
battery capacity and built to a limited budget, teams try and complete as many laps of a closed course as possible in one hour.
Guildford Grammar School took part in the competition in March this year.
Guildford Grammar School entered three
teams in Class B and loaned a further
three vehicles to new schools entering the
competition. The teams were comprised as
follows: with only several hours of practice the week
before the event. Team members were
Sienna Tolomei (11SG), Chelsea Wulff
(11He), Tia Mackenzie (11Wb) and spare
driver Arian Tolomei.
Team 1 The event was held on 10 March at the
Hurricane Go Kart Track in Wundowie. The
weather was fine with a little breeze and the
track was run in an anti-clockwise (opposite)
direction from previous events.
Students from the 2017 Year 11
Engineering Studies class formed one team
to compete with their slightly modified
2017 build vehicle #3. Team members were
Charles Martinovich (12Fr), Matt Butcher
(12Fr) and Ryan Bradley (12SG).
Team 2
Friday afternoon activities students used
a vehicle that was borrowed from Wesley
College as the Friday afternoon vehicle was
still under construction. Team members
were Joshua Sharp (11St), (12Be), Zack
Goodchild (11SG) and Euan Bryde (11He).
Teams had to sign up prior to 2.00pm to
complete the official CAMS registrations,
followed by vehicle inspections for team and
driver briefings. The event started a little
after 4.30pm and ran for just over an hour.
Team 3 Team 1 performed heroically and finished
1st in Class B, missing out on overall winner
of the three classes by just 1/3 of a lap
when their battery finally gave out just prior
to the finish line.
The first all-girls Guildford Grammar School
team drove the 2017 built aluminum vehicle Team 2 finished in 10th place in a vehicle
they had never driven before and with some
technological features that were new to our
school.
Team 3 finished in 11th place in B class,
which was a very great effort on the day,
including driving with all four drivers and
having an extra pit stop to accommodate
the driver changes.
Cars that we loaned to other schools
achieved the following positions being
driven by other school teams:
• 3rd place in Class C by All Saints School
• 4th Place in Class C by Helena College
(Mr Sam Davy’s Engineering students)
• 12th Place in Class B by Helena College
(Mr Sam Davy’s Engineering students)
All in all it was a safe and enjoyable time for
all involved!
