SENIOR SCHOOL Bonding for National Boarding Week We are fortunate in the boarding community to have an array of events and activities that we participate in on a daily basis. These can be school related events such as Chapel, sport or academic study time. They can be co-curricular based activities such as surfing, cooking, horse-riding, painting, Cadets, learning to drive a car or even mastering kung-fu. Or, for one week a year, our boarders come together as a unique sub-culture of our school to participate in events to celebrate everything that is boarding. This special week is known as National Boarding Week and Guildford Grammar School is not the only school participating. This year there were hundreds of schools from across the country who came together to promote the amazing lifestyle that boarders have and to acknowledge their contributions to the wider community. Within our own boarding community we celebrated National Boarding Week in three ways. We opened the week by inviting 20 other boarding schools from across the state to visit our beautiful campus for a day of fun in the sun. Our boarders formed groups made up of students from all other participating schools and the boys and girls learnt and competed in games such as archery, laser tag, photo competitions and scavenger hunts around the School. It was great to join with other boarding schools and to see so many of our boarders relaxing with other students from their home towns. On the Wednesday of Boarding Week our Year 12 Boarding Prefects held a BBQ and Open House at Sir Francis Burt Hall. We invited the whole school community to come down for a BBQ lunch and to tour the Hall to see exactly what it’s like to live as a boarder. It was a wonderful day and we raised a significant amount of money which we will continue to use to support the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Last but certainly not least, we held the annual Boarders vs Day Students Football match on the Chapel Close at lunchtime on the Thursday of Boarding Week. It was incredible to see so many members of the school attend this event and once again the Boarders were the victors on the day. Our team was admirably lead by our Captain of Boarding Mason Sullivan (12Fr) and the Best on Ground award went to the talented Jordan Clark (12Ha). A huge thank you to everyone who supported these events and helped us celebrate National Boarding Week. Mr Matt Weston Head of Boarding World’s Greatest Shave Eighty brave boys and one brave girl took part in the World’s Greatest Shave in April, raising over $37,000 towards the Leukaemia Foundation! Thank you to all of our families for your generous support helping us to raise over $37,000. Mrs Claire Hughes was our highest fundraiser, raising just short of $4,000, closely followed by Ryan Sullivan with $3,355 and James Ford with $1,339. Added to the Preparatory School’s fundraising through Crazy Hair Day, the School raised over $64,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation Western Australia in a three week period. Update: The School received an award on Wednesday 20 June for being the highest fundraiser in the WA education category and second in Australia! 22
