Swimming

The main goal of swimming at Guildford Grammar School is simple – improve our performance at PSA level . The School has been proactive in facilitating the achievement of this goal , and acknowledges the importance of developing swimming talent from an earlier age . Coupled with this is a more obvious requirement for our students to be swimming year round . Head Coach Brett Tongue and his coaching team are working hard to develop our swimmers through a variety of school and club-based programs and initiatives . Linked closely to this is a year-round commitment to swimming .
There have been significant changes across all levels of swimming at Guildford Grammar School in recent years . Our programs are now structured to facilitate a more streamlined progression from Kindergarten right through to Senior School .
The Preparatory School now has an Aqua Awareness program for Kindergarten and Pre-Primary students , in-term Swimming Lessons for Years 1 to 3 , and JSHAA & Triathlon Club Swimming Training for Years 4 to 6 . Added to this is the highly successful after school Guildford Grammar Learn to Swim School , which currently caters to over 100 children per school term .
Once students have achieved a minimum of Stage 6 in the Learn to Swim School , they can then progress into the Junior Squads of the School ’ s swimming club , the Guildford & Kalamunda Districts Swimming Club , which trains all year around , across two venues ( Guildford Grammar School
& Darling Range ), catering to both short and long-course training and competition requirements . Here , students further refine their technical skills and learn how to race and compete in one of Perth ’ s most successful swimming clubs .
For the first time in a long time , the Preparatory School now places regularly in the top four at JSHAA inter-school
competition . Our Preparatory School students swam with distinction earlier this year , winning the shield in the Hills inter-school Carnival .
In the Senior School , the highlight of the 2016 season was the ‘ coming together ’ of the swim team at the PSA Quadrangular Swim Meet at Hale school . The goal of the squad was to beat CBC Fremantle , and that
was achieved . It was a delight to watch staff , parents and students enjoy the occasion . At the PSA Inter-School Swimming at HBF Stadium , an improvement in our depth and level of competitiveness was evident , but the need for more experienced club swimmers was highlighted once again .
To this end , and in addition to existing Senior School swimming initiatives , boys now have the opportunity to swim all year round if they wish . Students now have the option to choose swimming as a winter sport and train as part of the Guildford & Kalamunda Districts Swimming Club ( GKDSC ). Conditions do apply , so if students are interested they should firstly speak to Mr Ian Frame ( Sports Master ), and then seek specific club training details and requirements from Head Swimming Coach , Mr Brett Tongue .
Senior School programs currently include the development of a defined swimming skills set as part of Year 7 to 10 Physical Education ; choosing swimming as a summer school sport , where a structured coaching program of three levels is offered ( including dry-land gym sessions ), and PSA inter-school training sessions held in the mornings during Terms 1 & 4 . These sessions are largely skills-based ( not fitness-based ) and focus primarily on preparing boys for PSA swimming meets in Term 1 . Year 11 & 12 students also have the opportunity in Term 1 to become trained and accredited as AUSTSWIM teachers as part of their Friday afternoon activities program .
