CHAPEL CENTENARY
Lady Day, 2014 was an historic, uplifting
and totally appropriate and wonderful
celebration; an occasion that will live in
the memory of all present. As the Chapel
of St Mary and St George continues to
proclaim Christ crucified, risen and ascended
throughout the next one hundred years
so too will the stunningly evocative and
deeply spiritual setting of Gerard Brophy’s
“Ordinary” continue to proclaim the same
truth.

As Captain of the Chapel Choir for 2014
I could not have been more pleased with
the performance of the combined choirs.
My thanks go to all the individual members
of the choirs, all the staff in charge of the
choirs and the guest conductors. Without
their dedication and persistence, the
performance of such a piece would not be
possible.
In my experience, with most musical
performances a lot of time and effort goes
into reaching a certain point of excellence
or perfection for only one night, which
often goes forgotten in a matter of days
or weeks. Fortunately this is not the case
with the performance for the Centenary of
the Chapel. The Guildford Grammar School
Chapel is a monument which I hope to see
live on with the memory and recording of
the musical performance for its Centenary.
It has truly been a wonderful experience to
have played a part in such an historic event
in the life of not only the School but also
the Chapel.

2014 Choir Captain
It was an enjoyable experience to work
alongside the Song Company and renowned
didgeridoo player William Barton. It was
exciting to perform a Mass written this
century; it is common for Chapel Choirs to
sing music from composers such as Mozart,
Handel, Byrd or Bach, who are all of times
gone by. The mass was an exciting modern
mass, which when performed, will always
have a deep and spiritual connection to both
the School, its beloved and iconic Chapel and
all of those involved in the production and
performance of the Mass.
