PR E PA R ATORY S C HO OL 5TT bushfire and flooding presentations This term, Ms Teuchert’s Year 5 class have been learning about the impact bushfires and floods can have on Australian communities and environments. Students have been investigating the severity, frequency and location of major bushfires and floods and have researched the ways to minimise the impact of these disasters. By developing an understanding of the principles of prevention, mitigation and preparedness the Year 5s were able to gain insight into how the impact of bushfires and floods could be reduced. The task for students was to demonstrate their understanding of the impact of bushfires and floods by researching and presenting about one major bushfire or flood disaster in Australia’s history. Presentations ranged from the 1947 Tasmanian Floods through to the 2009 Black Saturday Bushfires in Victoria. Each student confidently presented their research with a rich amount of detail surrounding the cause of the disasters, the impact on the community and environment, the response of the community, various pictures and statistics as well as specific disaster plans and emergency procedures. Together, the students of 5TT have gained a knowledgeable insight and understanding of a topic that has harsh relevance to Australia and hopefully are able to take the information they have learnt in class and apply it to applicable scenarios in the future.
