Chaplain’s Report
Term 1, 2014
While the celebration of the 100th
anniversary of the consecration of the Chapel
of St Mary & St George will undoubtedly
be the major focus of the life of the Chapel
in 2014 it is also timely to record the
importance in the life of not only the Chapel
but of the School of congregational singing,
“Congo” in the vernacular, the resurgence
of the Chapel Choirs and the remarkable
contribution to the School of the Guild of
Servers in the Senior School and the Chapel
Team in the Preparatory School.
Whenever a new relief teacher is employed
by the Senior School, Mr Benzie, the
Assistant Head of the Senior School, takes
them for a session of congregational
singing. Nearly always he reports that the
teacher is astounded not only by the quality
of the singing, which is very high, but by
the sheer fact that in the Chapel there are
approximately 360 boys, aged 12 to 17
years, singing hymns, some contemporary
and some as ancient as the third and fourth
centuries; all sung with vigour, joy and skill.
It is a credit to Mr David Gething who so
wonderfully conducts this master class in
congregational singing and participation.
