David O ’ Halloran ( He 1937-1940 ) celebrated his 97th birthday in August 2020 . David recalls how he attended Henn ’ s House in two separate ways , firstly as a boarder 1937-1940 and secondly for surgery at the Army General Hospital , as it then was in 1942 . He was able to tell the nursing staff ( mostly from New South Wales ) something of the history of the School .
Basil Caldwell ( Sc 1944-1949 ) turned 90 in October 2020 . He did have a stint in hospital this year after tripping and breaking two ribs , but otherwise he is in good spirits . Basil enjoys reading the Forward .
Robert Doney ( SG 1954-1956 ) will be awarded his OBE ( Oh Bloody Eighty !) in February 2021 .
Kenneth ‘ Ken ’ Gorringe ( SG 1950-1959 ), and wife June , have been living in Kalbarri for the past nine years . Kalbarri has been a great place to be isolated for them with fishing , golfing and just enjoying the magnificent West Australian outdoors . Ken ’ s family is all grown up with two Old Guildfordian sons , David Gorringe ( SG 1975-1979 ) and Vincent Gorringe ( SG 1977- 1981 ), living in Perth with their own families , and two daughters married and also living in Perth . Ken ’ s sons and daughters are all in good health , and Ken and June have six grandchildren in total , one of which is the third generation to graduate from Guildford Grammar School in Tristan Gorringe ( SG 2015-2020 ) ... truly a proud moment .
David Blair ( St / Wb 1961-1963 ), esteemed physicist and Emeritus Professor , was awarded the prestigious 2020 ‘ Prime Minister ’ s Prize for Science ’ for his outstanding and groundbreaking research and findings relating to the discovery of gravitational waves . David ’ s research at The University of Western Australia explored the detection of two substantial black holes which collided 1.3 billion years ago , and his team was pivotal in detecting the resulting gravitational waves . He and his team pioneered an incredibly powerful facility in Gingin , Western Australia to investigate the nature of light , sound and heat , and their interactions with , and in the detection of , gravitational waves .
John Cowcher ( Ha 1961-1963 ) and his family were recently recognised for their 50 years of membership at Herefords Australia . John , who tragically died in a boating accident in January 2019 , established the Quaindering Poll Hereford stud , Williams , in 1970 . He served on the boards of the Australian Hereford Society from 1982-1991 , Australian Poll Hereford Society from 2005 to 2010 and the amalgamated Herefords Australia Limited from 2007 to 2012 . John also held roles on State committees and , at the time of his death , was the President of Herefords WA group , a position he had held since 2013 .
Howard Lance ( Sc / St 1966-1968 ) was featured in a video published by the Western Australian Association of Mental Health ( WAAMH ). In his exposé , Howard explored the issue of

homelessness and expressed how important amenities , diet and sleep are to maintain strong mental health and wellbeing . The ‘ Prevent Support Heal ’ campaign initiated by WAAMH endeavours to shine a light on , and lend a hand to , those in Western Australia who are experiencing hardship . The campaign focusses on strengthening community support programs , working toward affordable housing , encouraging higher employment and achieving an education for West Australians .
Richard Brown ( Sc 1976-1981 ) has been announced as the Advance Dandaragan Quiet Achiever for 2020 . Richard is known as a true local through and through , attending Dandaragan Primary School and then Guildford Grammar School . He was also awarded the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh Award .
Ashley Jones ( He 1980-1984 ) and Tracy Jones from Dowerin attribute simplicity as the key for mixed enterprise farmers . In 1904 , the Jones family established their farm in the Ejanding area near Dowerin . Ashley is the fourth generation in his family to farm since he returned from Guildford Grammar School in 1984 . Ashley and Tracy say the farm has been a great environment for them to raise their four teenage boys , Kelly Jones ( He 2014-2018 ), Darcy Jones ( He 2015-2020 ), Lewis Jones ( He 2015-2020 ) and Cameron Jones ( 11He ).
Jarron Baker ( He 1986-1988 ) married Monia Toscano in the School Chapel on 14 November 2020 .
Cornel Ozies ( Ha 1995-1999 ) directed a short film on Western Australia ’ s first Indigenous-run police station . The documentary sheds light on creating and sustaining positive relationships between police forces and our Aboriginal Communities . Our Law screened online as part of the Sydney Film Festival .
John Seabrook ( Sc 1995-1999 ) was featured alongside his family in an article in The West Australian about the welcomed rainfall in August 2020 , which would have benefited crop yields greatly in the harvest . John reported that his crops were “ on the brink of losing potential ,” until much-needed rainfall provided some relief for the farming community . The Seabrook name is synonymous with Guildford
Grammar School , with Calvyn Seabrook ( Boarder 1896-1899 ) among the very first intake of students schooled in Woodbridge in 1896 . Woodbridge was the home of the School ’ s founder , Charles Harper .
Elliot Hillier ( Prep 1999-2002 & SG 2004- 2005 ) married Tahnee Goodman in the School Chapel on 24 October 2020 .
Deon Attard ( SG 2005-2006 ) married Autumn Zovko in the School Chapel on 31 October 2020 .
Kieran McErlean ( St 2000-2007 ) and wife Gemma Haddleton ( Staff ) celebrated their first wedding anniversary on 7 December 2020 . They fondly recall their special day and are grateful for the many Old Guildfordians that joined them to celebrate , some having travelled from Brisbane , Canada , Norway and the Philippines .
David Armstrong ( Sc 1997-2010 ) is enjoying giving back to the community . He is Vice President of Kalamunda Cricket Club , and in 2020 he was appointed as a Director of West Australian Suburban Turf Cricket Association . To allow time to focus on these new responsibilities , David resigned from the Management Committee of The Old Guildfordians Association after a tremendous 10 years of service as a committee member ( 2011- 2020 ), serving eight of those years as Treasurer . We thank David for his wonderful support throughout the years .
Gerald Ugle ( Be 2007-2010 ) flew from Perth to Sydney as a 17-year-old to make his debut with the Greater Western Sydney Giants - and his life has changed in many ways after he signed on to the AFL . As described in an article by the Giants , three years later , Gerald flew back home , with three AFL games under his belt , a one-year-old son in the seat beside him and a determination to do whatever he could to get a second chance . Ugle had struggled to break into the team during his time at the Giants and suspected his delisting was coming , but he left with the encouraging words of the new coach , Leon Cameron , stuck in his head . “ He told me the bad news , but then he told me I should keep going , keep fighting for it ,” Ugle said . “ I went home thinking , I want to get another shot .” When back in the State and at his new WAFL club , Peel Thunder , Gerald worked hard and earned the opportunity to captain the side . With six years of WAFL footy and more than 100 games behind him , Gerald has now moved to Kalgoorlie with his family to focus on work , with plans to start a mature-age electrical apprenticeship . He ’ ll keep playing footy too , for Mines Rovers , where his father-in-law once played .
Lachlann Lawton ( St 2010-2011 ) was featured in an article by West Australian Opera in which he discussed his musical experiences and activities during the pandemic period . The article expressed how challenges brought forth by COVID-19 have sparked fierce creativity in performing and sharing of opera . The 2020 Wesfarmers Arts Young Artist outlined his recent role in The Telephone – a portrayal of
42
