Golfing triumph

The Guildford Grammar School golf program continues to grow and flourish , even after the season was significantly influenced by a period of isolation where players were unable to play .
The team of Owen Carroll ( 10Sc ), Riley Schafer ( 7Fr ) and Aiden Georgy ( 8Ha ) competed in the Secondary Schools Championships , which is a handicap event , played at the Cottesloe Golf Club in very challenging weather conditions . This team came second overall , by only one point , but were successful in bringing home the Independent Schools Trophy again this year . In addition , Owen Carroll was the first placed Year 10 student across the whole competition .
The annual PSA competition was in doubt until the last minute due to complications relating to COVID-19 , but the event was finally confirmed to be played at the Seaview Golf course in Cottesloe . The PSA competition includes a team of up to 8 players , with the best four scores added together for the School ’ s final result . The team selected was Ben Chapman ( 12Sc ) as Captain , Samuel Pepper ( 12Sc ), Charlie Weston ( 12He ), Thomas Sykes ( 11St ), Owen Carroll ( 10Sc ), Cody O ’ Brien ( 10Ha ), Riley Neill ( 10St ) and Riley Schafer ( 7Fr ).
The weather was perfect for golf on the day and many of the players met their potential , but all were influenced one way or the other by the challenges provided by this excellent coastal golf course . Our school placed sixth by only five points in a very tough field .
On Friday afternoons , we offer a golf activity that focuses on learning to play golf and this has been a very successful activity in 2020 with the program at maximum capacity in most terms that it was offered . The group initially learned their golf skills on the flats , but once they had a reasonable level of skill , the students were challenged to play at the Altone Park Golf Course . This is where they realised that the game of golf is both a mental and physical challenge , filled with frustration , celebrations and disappointments .
It is hoped that through the Guildford Grammar School golf program , we can create a lifetime love for a sport that is able to be played ( competitively and socially ) for many decades after our students finish school .
