The Sensory Garden gets clucky !
In 2020 , we have seen many initiatives and innovations within Learning Enrichment , however , the biggest transformation was the creation of the Sensory Garden . With the generous contribution from the P & F Society , Learning Enrichment transformed the old brick courtyard of Robinson Court into a beautiful interactive space . The Sensory Garden has plants and other materials that are an excellent tool for both therapeutic and educational purposes . The educational advantages are not only apparent for students , but they also extend to the whole Guildford Grammar School community .
There are a variety of ways that the experience can be educational . For example , Learning Enrichment students have incorporated the growing of vegetables into their independent living and mathematics curriculum through the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program . This program introduces enjoyable food education to form positive food habits for life . The recipe for effective food
education reflects the vegetables , herbs and fruits grown , season-by-season , by the students in the garden beds .
The most recent addition to the Sensory Garden has been the introduction of four chickens . The Learning Enrichment students hatched the chickens through the ‘ U Can Hatch Us – Chick Hatching Program ’ in their science curriculum and incorporated building the chicken coop in their practical woodwork and Mathematics classes .
Students are engaged in the program and the benefits of having chickens at Guildford Grammar School allow students to learn about caring for and nurturing other living things , whilst also learning about animal life cycles and the connections between animals , people and plants .
We will continue to grow and develop the sensory garden in 2021 .
