Louis Goldie � Henn ’ s House 1933-1936
Professor Louis Goldie - Graduated from Law at UWA with first class honors . Served in the Australian military as a navigator and then a paratrooper . Studied law again at University of Sydney and graduated with first class honors and then his masters of laws . Worked as the Secretary to the Royal Commission on New Guinea Timber Rights . Then took a position as a legal officer for the Commonwealth of Australia ' s Attorney Generals Department . Then accepted a position as a lecturer at the Australian National University and then as Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of California in Los Angeles . Over his career , he taught at a number of institutions across America . He spent the majority of his career as the Director of the International Legal Studies Program and Professor of Law at the Syracuse University College of Law until his retirement in 1989 . In recognition of his scholarship and devotion to the College of Law , he was presented with the Chancellors Award for Exceptional Academic Achievement in 1988 . He founded the Syracuse Journal of International Law and Commerce in 1972 , a journal that is still a well recognised source of scholarship on issues of public and private international law . From 1972-1973 he acted as consultant to the Republic of Korea on its Continental Shelf Rights in the East China Sea . He also served as Counsel for Turkey in the Aedean Sea dispute from 1975-1976 . He then became the Senior Legal Officer in the Office of Legal Affairs , United Nations Secretariat .
James ' Kaye ' Greenham
Stirling House 1953-1958
A pitcher , hitter and infielder , Kaye was known for being a dominant player throughout his career and among the top players nationally . While still at Guildford Grammar School , Kaye was the first ever schoolboy representative of the Western Australia senior state team , and he was selected in every team he was eligible for between 1957 and 1974 . He won five premierships with Swan Districts ( between 1957 and 1963 ), one at South Perth ( 1966 ) and one at East Fremantle ( 1974 ). In 1959 , the New York Yankees approached Kaye , making him one of the first Australians to be offered a professional contract by a US major league franchise . This opportunity to compete for a spot in the US major leagues was something that Kaye and his family agonised over . The offer was turned down and Kaye instead pursued and achieved his goal of becoming a doctor in Perth . Kaye ’ s impact has been recognised before with his induction into the Australian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014 and in 2021 being inducted into the WA Baseball Hall of Fame .
Murray Grime
Stirling House 1979-1984
Regarded as one of the best hockey umpires in the world . Selected to officiate at four Olympic Games and reached the 200 international match milestone on 23 October 2016 , the fifth person to achieve this feat . Murray was the 2004 Old Guildfordian of the Year .
Arthur ' Pompey ' Gull � 1899-1905
After leaving school he worked on one of the family properties at Balingup before at the age of 20 investing in pearling luggers first at Cossack and then at Broome . The nickname of Pompey was given to him by the local Aboriginals when he was about 14 as a mark of respect for a white man whom they could trust . Arthur left Broom when World War 1 commenced and enlisted at Blackboy Hill on 19 January 1915 in WA ' s famous 10th Light Horse regiment . After three months training , he embarked for Gallipoli on the Troopship HMAT A20 Hororata as part of the 5th Reinforcements . He was one of the few West Australians to survive the infamous charge at the Nek in Aug 1915 , the same action that killed the two Harper brothers . He survived by throwing himself behind the body of a very dead New Zealander , then crawling back into the trench after dark , to discover he had three bullet holes in the crown of his hat . After Gallipoli , parts of the 10th Light Horse were re-mounted on camels to become the Australian Brigade of the Imperial Camel Corps . Arthur as Sergeant was one of 20 Australians who were seconded to become an escort for Lawrence of Arabia , when he visited the British Headquarters in Aqaba . Arthur took part in some of Lawrence ' s raids on the Hejaz Railway . By 1917 , Arthur was back with the 10th Light Horse in a support role for the 14th and took part in the famous charge at Beersheba . In the 14th he was amongst the leading contingents in the liberation of Jerusalem and the entry into Damascus and took part in the rout of the Turkish Army at the Barada Gorge . During his service in Palestine , Arthur was severely wounded by bayonet and left for dead on the battlefield for 24 hours before being rescued . He was also wounded by a rogue bull camel . His wounds were bound by an Arab boy who then carried him by camel 60 miles to the nearest military hospital . Arthur received a filed commission to Lieutenant and was awarded the Military Cross in September 1918 for leading an attack on Turkish machine guns in the gardens of Damascus during the liberation of the city . After the war Arthur re-registered his pearling luggers until the decline of the industry and managed a mine at Wodgina and then went back to farming at Three Springs . After leaving Three Springs he farmed at Doodlakine . Arthur was again called for service in WW2 where he was promoted to Captain and was in charge of fortifications on Rottnest .
Geoffrey Hale
St George ’ s House 1951-1953
Kings Cup Rower . After graduating , Geoffrey undertook a Management Training Program with BP Australia , while continuing his sporting interests in rowing and underage football for Swan Districts and East Perth . He was called up for National Service in the Navy in 1957 . Geoffrey ’ s efforts in rowing took him all the way to the Rome 1960 Olympics . Geoffrey returned to Guildford Grammar School as Registrar 1970-1990 , and as Community Liaison Officer 1991-1996 . As MIC Rowing ( 1985-1994 ) he was a driving force in the establishment and success of the Guildford Rowing Association ( GRA ).
