125 years of accomplishments by 125 Old Guildfordians – a look back in time

In commemoration of Guildford Grammar School ’ s 125th anniversary , the following list of 125 accomplished Old Guildfordians has been compiled from a combination of community nominations , external records and the School Archives . Please note that this is not a list of the ‘ most accomplished ’ of the School ’ s former students , nor is it recognition of service to the School .
This list aims to celebrate a cross-section of our community that have achieved excellence in adult life , including occupational , sporting , cultural , personal , altruistic or communitybuilding endeavours . We can be proud of the outstanding achievements of those 125 Old Guildfordians listed , and we can be proud of our broader community with members following their own paths as they ‘ Go Forward ’ through life .
Donald Aitken � Stirling House 1938-1941
Met the road transport needs of an emerging Perth metropolis as the Main Roads Commissioner from 1965 to 1987 , the youngest to fill the role at age 40 . Honours awarded to Don include the Imperial Service Order , WA Citizen of the Year for the Professions , and an officer of the Order of Australia . Former Old Guildfordian of the Year .
Robert Anderson
Stirling / Harper House 1949-1958
A Professional Mediator and Arbitrator who was formerly a Judge of the Supreme Court of WA ( 1990- 2003 ). He was appointed Queen ’ s Counsel in 1984 . Other roles since then have included Chair of the State Legislative Review Committee , President of the WA Bar Association , Vice President of the Australian Bar Association , Chair of the State Planning Appeal Tribunal , President of the Industrial Appeal Court of WA , Special Investigator for the Australian Sports Commission Inquiry into Allegations of Illicit Drugs in the Sport of Cycling , Chairman of Abra Mining Limited ( a publicly listed mineral exploration company ) and Independent Australian Director of Abra Mining Limited following its takeover by Hunan Nonferrous Group of China . He was also Chair of the Statutory Review Reference Group appointed by the Minister for Police to conduct a review of the operation and effectiveness of the Criminal Investigation ( Identifying People ) Act 2002 ( WA ). In addition , he was the Principal author of the Reference Group Report tabled in State Parliament in April 2009 . A report Robert wrote , after his inquiry into allegations of drug use in Olympic cycling , led directly to the establishment of the Australian Sports Anti- Doping Authority ( ASADA ) in 2006 . This agency is regarded as essential in the combatting of illicit drugs in all Australian sports .
Albert Arcus � St George ’ s House 1936-1939
Rhodes Scholar 1946 . Whilst studying Engineering at UWA , Albert served three terms as President of the Guild of Undergraduates at UWA before being elected as an Honorary Life Associate in 1946 . In the same year he was awarded the Rhodes Scholarship . He represented Australia at the International Students ’ Conference in Switzerland in 1947 . On leaving Oxford in 1949 , he returned to Western Australia with an Engineering Degree . In 1954 , he was appointed Australian Government Assistant Trade Commissioner in Indonesia .
Francis ' John ' Ballard
St George ’ s House 1948-1957
He is an author of about 300 scientific publications and is a recipient of several research awards . He has served as President of the Australian Society of Biochemistry and as Vice-President of the biotechnology industry association , AusBiotech Ltd . He was elected to the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering in 1997 , awarded CSIRO ' s Business Excellence Medal in 2001 , the Centenary Medal in 2003 and the ATSE Clunies Ross Medal in 2004 . John received the BioSpectrum Life Time Achievement Award in 2012 . A Managing Director of BR Angels Pty Ltd and co-founder of BioAngels Inc , both of which reflect his main activities as an angel investor . He is a Director of Neubody Pty Ltd , past Chairman of the Australian Proteome Analysis Facility Ltd and the biotechnology company AdAlta Pty Ltd and was previously a Director of the Australian Institute of Commercialisation Ltd and served on the Commercial Opportunity Panel of Adelaide Research & Innovation Pty Ltd . He was previously Managing Director and CEO of GroPep Ltd , positions he held since the inception of the company in 1988 . In August 2000 he guided GroPep to a successful initial public offering and listing on the ASX . He was also the CEO of the Cooperative Research Centre for Tissue Growth and Repair from 1991 until 1999 . John is an inventor on many of GroPep ' s patents and coordinated their prosecution and commercialisation .

Received a Member of the Order of Australia Award in recognition of service to public communication , particularly through Radio Australia .
Tudor Barnett � St George ’ s House 1938-1942
Director-General of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation ( ASIO ) from 1981 to 1985 . He was awarded an Officer of the Order of Australia ( AO ) in recognition of service to the Public Service .
